Day 8 — The beat of the spiral Pt. II

Day 8 was a very productive session. We finally finished ‘The H is Silent’! (well, almost, we still have to record vocals, but that’s coming in later). We struggled a bit crafting the ending of the song, mainly because of some technical issues, but at the end we came up with something that matches perfectly with the concept of the song.

Later, we moved on to my song ‘A long farewell’. This song was inspired by the movie ‘Cloud Atlas’. It talks about how through our life we have to say goodbye to everyone we meet, and it asks the question if maybe we’ll find each other again in another life. I often think about the concept of reincarnation, and it’s one of the existencial themes mentioned throughout the album. The movie ‘Cloud Atlas’ made me think about how everything is possibly connected, and considering it gave me some peace. Maybe we all have known each other from the beginning of times and we as a whole are pushing mankind through its own evolution. We just don’t remember each other, because we also have to say goodbye to ourselves to move on to the next life. And when that happens, we leave our memories with that being that we used to be. Sometimes I like to think that those memories stay in a collective consciousness in the world, and that’s why so many strange things happen to us now and then, like things that are familiar to us but we don’t know why, feelings of deja vu, etc. BUT WELL, I’m way off track now. We actually finished that song as well. We’ll be calling a drummer in a couple of weeks so he can record all the new parts that Charles produced. He went for it and brought in some grooves I didn’t even remotely consider for the song, but they work SO WELL! I’m sure the people that have listened to the song before will love them as well.

Once we were done with that, we moved on to my song ‘Numb’ (I’ll tell you more about the song in my next entry, so don’t miss it!). This song was also begging for some new beats. All I can say is, I can’t wait to play this song live. It’s my most aggressive song, and the power of the new drum parts will make it a thousand times more interesting. Charles started crafting the last chorus first (in other words, the climax). I’ve often heard of film composers that like to start writing music for the most important scene of the movie first. Some of the reasons are because it’s probably the most difficult scene to score, and it’s probably the culmination of the story. Once you sort that out, you can go back to the beginning and work your way up to that peak of the movie. I’m not sure if Charles chose this strategy on purpose, but either way it made sense to me. ‘Numb’ has a big climax, so it’s a good starting point to know in which direction we’re going to build up the rest of the song.

We had to call it a day before finishing it, but we did a lot of work and I’m very happy about it. I can’t wait to go back on Monday :) That’s all I have for you now. Thank you very much for reading!

Cheers!
